Take the time to start the conversation about mental health in your workplace

Submitted on Thursday, 31st August 2017

World suicide prevention day and RUOK? Day are on 10 and 14 September respectively and provide the perfect opportunity for you to start the conversation around mental health in your workplace. In Australia, more than 2500 people die by suicide each year with hundreds of others being impacted by suicide death. Additionally, research tells us that 1 in 5 employees will experience a mental health illness each year. So with these figures in mind, this month, why not focus on taking the time to notice what’s going on with your work colleagues and have a conversation when you notice something has changed.

There are 4 key steps to having the conversation:

1.       Ask

2.       Listen

3.       Encourage action

4.       Check in

RUOK? Day provides a free workplace resource pack on their website to help you run a mental health awareness raising event and is a great opportunity to bring people together and ask the question that may save a life – are you okay?
