Jacques Villeneuve

Jacques Villeneuve’s more than decade-long international racing career is one for the history books.

First proving himself in Italian saloon cars, rising through F3, and in 1995, at 24 years old, becoming the youngest winner of both the Indianapolis 500 race and IndyCar championship in the US.

The following year he was unleashed on the world of Formula One under the Williams banner; starting at pole position in the first race of the season at the Australian Grand Prix. By the end of the year, Villeneuve would finish his rookie season at second place in the Drivers’ Championship.

In the dramatic 1997 season, Villeneuve hit his stride, winning seven races and beating out Michael Schumacher for the Drivers’ Championship.

Over his career, Villeneuve generated just as much interest off the track as he did on it. He unreservedly challenged convention and authority – much to the irritation of the FIA. His straight-talking rebel status, rock-star grunge dress and rainbow dyed hair only further endeared him to the fans.

Villeneuve would go on to race for BAR, Renault and finally Sauber, bringing his long racing career to a close in 2006.
