Think young, think safe!
The theme of this year’s event is ‘Generation Safe and Healthy’, focusing on young workers. WorkSafe Victoria’s claim data highlights that up to 50 young workers (aged 15 to 24) are injured in Victoria each week. Already this year, a 21-year-old man was seriously injured when he fell through a roof on a construction site in Geelong and another 21-year-old man died in a trench collapse near Ballarat in March.
The Victorian Chamber encourages all employers to focus on how they can further improve the safety of their young workers. Young workers have an increased risk of workplace injury due to their lack of experience, maturity and awareness of work health and safety responsibilities. It is essential that employers help create a safe and healthy work environment for young workers by:
- educating young workers about their rights and responsibilities
- providing young workers with the knowledge to perform their work safely
- having processes and the culture in the workplace that encourages and allows young workers to speak up regarding safety issues in the workplace.
The Victorian Chamber’s Supporting Young Workers program, run in partnership with EML – an appointed workers compensation insurance agent, provides employers with extensive resources to assist with managing young worker safety. Resources include:

- Talking safety with young workers
- Why young workers are vulnerable in the workplace
- An eight-part toolkit providing information and tools to achieve a safe and healthy work environment for young workers.
Safe Work Australia has also launched a young workers section of its website, providing additional information and resources.
