Chief Executive Update 23 March 2022

23 March 2022

The Chamber is working overtime to ensure business remains our number one priority. As we have done right through the pandemic, we are continuing to advocate strongly on behalf of our members with all levels of government in what will be a critical year with both federal and state elections.

We know there are still many challenges facing business, particularly when it comes to hiring and retaining staff. Your feedback is vital so if you are facing issues or have suggestions that may help alleviate our state’s current skills and improve our employment system, then we would love to hear from you through this short, confidential survey.

We have been pushing for the removal of masks for retail and hospitality workers, and while we haven’t yet found a way through, we will continue to push the case. You may have caught some of our media last week.

Tomorrow we will release our Federal Election Platform. This is an exciting opportunity for us to advocate for the three big ideas that we have identified as being the most beneficial to Victorian businesses and jobs. These will help turbocharge our recovery and help secure Victoria’s future and Australia’s prosperity.

Like me, I’m sure you were surprised by the Victorian Opposition’s announcement that they would not repeal the Mental Health Levy should they win Government in November. When the Victorian Government announced the levy last year, our position was supportive of the Mental Health program but not the levy itself as it requires business to cover the cost via a levy. Our view remains and we will continue to advocate for the removal and/or reduction of the levy.

Our events are continuing to roll out at a rapid pace. We are looking forward to next week’s official 2022 NAB AFLW Grand Final Eve Lunch on Wednesday 30 March at Marvel Stadium. AFLW stars Ellie Blackburn, Steph Chiocci and Emma Kearney will join MC Jacqui Felgate for a lively discussion and it will be a great afternoon of footy, food, drinks and networking.

And don’t forget our Australian Grand Prix breakfast on Friday 8 April at Carousel, Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit with Formula One racing legend, David Coulthard, and CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Andrew Westacott, both taking to the podium. Tickets are still available, but this event does sell out every year so secure your seat now. Your spot includes access to the track after the event so you may want to block out the day!

Next week the Federal Government will hand down the 2022-23 Federal Budget and Pitcher Partners will once again host its annual Budget breakfast, which is free of charge and may be attended by both members and non-members. Join speakers Catherine Birch – ANZ and Brian Farrelly – Pitcher Partners at Zinc on Thursday March 31 as they examine what this Budget means for you. More information and registration details can be found here.

Please continue to get out and about and enjoy all Victoria has to offer. Easter is fast approaching which is the perfect time to book a getaway. Travel vouchers become available tomorrow and can be obtained here.
