Victorian Government reinstates COVIDSafe measures, restrictions

Following nine confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Northern Melbourne, the Victorian Government has reinstated several COVIDSafe measures as health officials pinpoint the source of the new cases.

From 6pm on 25 May, residents of Greater Melbourne will be required to comply with a series of reintroduced COVIDSafe measures, including:

  • Facemasks to be worn indoors , including in the workplace, unless an exemption applies
  • Private gatherings in the home limited to five visitors per day
  • Public gatherings limited to 30 people

“These additional measures are about keeping Victorians safe while our coronavirus detectives work to track down any additional cases and stamp out the spread of this deadly virus,” said Acting Premier James Merlino in a statement.

While schools and workplaces will remain open with no changes to density rules (and maintaining the restrictions currently in place), the Government is encouraging businesses to review and enact their COVIDSafe plans.

Facemasks are once again required in all indoor areas including workplaces, retail areas and hospitality venues, but can be removed while eating and drinking.

While public gatherings have been restricted to 30 people, events which have QR code services and COVIDSafe plans will continue to operate at their current density limits. Under these restrictions, it means that more than 30 people could not gather at a community park, as it does not have a QR code check-in. However, that group could meet at a hospitality venue after checking in.

As announced in the first week of May, the use of the Service Victoria QR code service will still be mandatory for all businesses that are required to do so from Friday, 28 May.

Victorians who live in Greater Melbourne are still able to travel to regional areas, but the restrictions travel with them. For example, a person from Melbourne who travels to a regional area will be required to wear a facemask indoors though the locals will not have to.
