From the Chief Executive - 16 February 2018

16 February 2018

Last week, we applauded the Victorian Parliament’s close scrutiny of the Labour Hire Licensing Bill 2017. While the bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly, the Coalition’s opposition to the bill is welcomed and signals an urgent need to re-examine this proposed scheme through a parliamentary inquiry. As there is already significant regulation of labour hire under existing laws, the Victorian Chamber is calling for better enforcement of these laws and not for a new licencing scheme that will cost Victorian jobs.

We have continued to advocate strongly to ensure the Westgate Tunnel project proceeds without amendment or delay, after suggestions that the Opposition or Greens may attempt to postpone the development or alter its funding. We have received wide media coverage on this issue, including an interview with ABC News and via a joint advertisement with other influential organisations placed in the Herald Sun and The Age. On behalf of our members, the Victorian Chamber calls for all parties to support the Westgate Tunnel project, which will deliver a much needed second river crossing, cut travel times, reduce congestion and boost liveability in Melbourne’s West and Geelong.

In other news, we are excited to be launching our 2018/19 State Budget submission and 2018 State Election campaign in the coming weeks. Both campaigns build on the extensive consultation undertaken in 2017 through the Victoria Summit and will escalate throughout the year, with collateral, media and many opportunities for members to get involved and showcase their work.

In the lead up to the 2018 State Election, we will continue to advocate to all political parties to adopt our policy recommendations. Please be sure to follow our social media channels for ongoing information regarding our priorities.
