From the Chief Executive - 19 December 2018

19 December 2018

Last week, the Victorian Chamber released the summer edition of our Business Excellence magazine, which has a special focus on innovation and ICT. In the constantly changing global marketplace, innovation and new technologies hold the key to business success, and this issue bravely pushes the boundaries of the ever-evolving "new".

If you are yet to view this edition, I encourage you to visit our website and read some of the insightful articles, including a feature from Deakin University on artificial intelligence at its CADET Virtual Reality Lab, aerospace brainwaves from CSIRO, bold UX strategies with Bastion Latitude, digital fluency from Data#3 and Victoria’s Chief Scientist Dr Amanda Caples answers our Hot Topic Q&A.

This month, the Victorian Opposition finalised its Shadow Cabinet. The Victorian Chamber congratulated the Hon Michael O’Brien MP on his appointment as Parliamentary Leader of the Victorian Liberal Party. We look forward to maintaining a strong relationship with Mr O’Brien and the Opposition to ensure business priorities are front and centre of the political agenda.

In an important economic development, the Federal Government’s Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO), released this week, shows a significant improvement in the federal budget bottom line. Higher than estimated company tax receipts are now expected to deliver a budget deficit for this year of $5.2 billion, less than half of what was predicted in May. While the deficit reduction is good news, we have urged the government to resist the temptation to spend to excess. Practical measures to reduce the cost of doing business must remain a priority for both the government and opposition in the lead up to the 2019 federal election.

On a final note, many of you will be looking forward to a well-earned break after a busy and productive 2018. The end of the year is a great time to reflect on our achievements and the contributions we have made and think about our aspirations for the New Year ahead.

In preparation for 2019, which is already shaping up to be another interesting and eventful year, I hope you all take some time with your friends and families to recharge and relax during the festive season.

On behalf of myself and the Victorian Chamber team, I thank you for your valued support in 2018 and wish you all a Merry Christmas. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
