Infrastructure Victoria unveil their 30-year draft strategy

The CEO of Infrastructure Victoria, Michel Masson, has detailed the organisation’s recently-released 30-year Infrastructure Draft Strategy at a Melbourne Chamber of Commerce Leadership lunch.

The strategy contains 95 draft recommendations to the Victorian Government across regional and metropolitan Melbourne, with a focus on harnessing infrastructure for productivity and growth, managing urban change, confronting the longer-term infrastructure challenges and plans to develop regional Victoria.

In his address to the MCC Leadership lunch, Mr Masson emphasised the importance for governments to plan infrastructure ‘beyond each election cycle’, and to look at enhancing and upgrading existing infrastructure rather than focusing on prioritising new projects.

Mr Masson also stressed the need for governments to look at infrastructure planning through a social lens and promoted the preventative and educational benefits infrastructure investment could deliver for community. Mr Masson also examined the behavioural change the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted on the way we work, along with the concept of the ‘20-minute city’ and Victoria’s energy transition.

To help stem COVID-19 economic impact across Victoria, the Victorian Chamber has continually called for a greater level of infrastructure spending for Victoria to recover and grow the state’s competitive and liveability credentials.

Large spending does however create substantial delivery risk, which is why it’s important for government to continue to provide the right environment for business confidence in Victoria through keeping costs down and cutting regulatory red tape.

Addressing these issues will be the focus of the Victorian Chambers State Budget submission for this year through the following three key themes:

  • Ease of doing business
  • Enabling business
  • Growing business

Infrastructure Victoria are currently undertaking industry and community consultation which concludes on February 26, 2021. The final 30-year infrastructure strategy is due to be presented to the Victorian Government in mid-2021.
