New young workers' safety "eToolkit" launched in NSW

14 February 2019

SafeWork NSW has created a new Young Worker Safety “eToolkit” to help people entering the workforce deal with bullying, abuse by customers, workplace injuries, mental health challenges and other issues.

The resource includes tools to help employers train and supervise young workers, and help parents or guardians of young workers raise workplace safety issues with them.

"Starting work for the first time is often daunting and many young people don't know their rights when it comes to dealing with workplace health and safety issues like harassment or bullying," NSW Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean said in announcing the eToolkit.

"That's why we've developed this toolkit, which is free to access and has loads of real-life stories and advice. It's often hard enough for older workers to have confidence when dealing with workplace health and safety issues, let alone young people entering the workplace for the first time," he said.

Employers must plan for and provide inexperienced young workers with regular refresher training and an adequate level of supervision that matches the level of risks they are exposed to and their degree of skills, knowledge and competencies for that workplace.

Businesses also need to be encouraging their young workers to be comfortable about speaking up about any safety issues they may identify, and for them to understand why speaking up is important for employee safety and protection.

The Victorian Chamber has been supporting Young Worker Safety in partnership with EML for several years and has also developed several key resources for this vulnerable employee group. The Victorian Chamber's Health Safety and Wellbeing team are highly qualified and experienced in reviewing, preparing and improving your procedures and practices for improving the workplace safety for young workers and upskilling your staff in these complex safety management needs.
