Victorian businesses weigh in on vaccination requirements

16 August 2021

With so much recent discussion and debate centred around enforcing mandatory vaccinations in workplaces and the allowance of greater freedoms for those fully vaccinated, the Victorian Chamber surveyed its members on the potential introduction of greater freedoms for vaccinated Australians.

The overwhelming majority of respondents see vaccination as a requirement for greater freedom within the community, with 72 per cent indicating that unvaccinated people should be restricted from attending sports and other events.

45 per cent of respondents supported mandatory vaccination as a condition of employment, while a further 29 per cent supported mandatory vaccination for some professions.

One third of respondents were providing time off work for staff to get vaccinated, consistent with reports from across the business community of efforts to support lifting vaccination rates. However, only three per cent were offering monetary incentives to staff to get vaccinated.

The survey was conducted on 11 and 12 August 2021 with 1,597 responses recorded from businesses across the state, including all sectors and small, medium, and large businesses.

To be attributed to Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Paul Guerra:

“These directly from Victorian businesses reveal that the majority support either mandatory vaccinations in the workplace, or at least for some professions. Almost a third would like to be able to offer vaccinations in the workplace.

“The majority of our members also support the introduction of greater freedoms from restrictions and entry to events for fully vaccinated people, and restrictions imposed for those who are not.

“The Victorian Chamber continues to encourage all those who can be vaccinated to do so. Our greatest chance of victory in the fight against COVID-19 and the lockdowns and hardships that come with it, is the vaccine.”
