We recently worked with a medium-sized employer in the not-for-profit sector to develop a customised safety leadership program for their management team. The program was designed after the business’ management team identified that their organisation needed help meeting its legislative obligations and progression towards building a positive and self-sustaining safety culture.
The business had received safety training in the past - much of it generic and not suited to the specific needs of their industry type. Together with the organisation’s Human Resources team, the Victorian Chamber’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing team developed a safety leadership program for managers that:
- educated participants about the organisation’s internal safety metrics (incident reports, workers’ compensation claims etc.),
- ensured managers understood and could implement the organisation’s own safety policies and procedures,
- incorporated case studies, both real and hypothetical, that reflected the unique challenges faced by not-for-profit organisations in a community-based care setting,
- included mixed elements from other training programs that we run, including how to support employees who are experiencing mental health issues, and Equal Opportunity employment.
This safety leadership program was a resounding success, with feedback indicating that managers appreciated engaging with content that was tailored to their industry and workplace culture. The organisation now plans to re-run the program periodically for managers who were unable to attend the original sessions, and for newly recruited managers and executives.
How we can help you
If your organisation has specific safety challenges, or a range of topics that you would like to highlight in training, it is worth the investment to consider a customised safety leadership program.
Providing safety training for managers and leaders doesn’t need to be an exercise in begrudging compliance. A customised safety leadership program can be a dynamic force for change within your organisation that attendees talk about in the weeks and months that follow.
