What businesses should know about the changing .au domain space

17 January 2022

The .au domain name space is undergoing significant change in 2022. The Victorian Chamber recommends that businesses with an online presence join us for an explanatory webinar in partnership with .au Domain Administration (auDA), the industry self-regulatory body for the .au domain.

From 24 March 2022, Australians will be able to register internet domain names directly before the .au (omitting .com), such as victorianchamber.au.

The introduction of .au is the result of significant public consultation dating back to 2015, bringing Australia in line with many other country code top-level domains, including the United Kingdom (.uk), Canada (.ca), United States (.us) and New Zealand (.nz).

The new namespace will:

  • Create a wider choice of available names for website and email addresses in the trusted Australian domain
  • Provide users with the opportunity to register shorter, more memorable domain names for website URLs and email addresses
  • Provide website URLs and email addresses that are easier to type and display on mobile devices.

If your business has a website, or you are interested in exploring online options for your business, this webinar will be of interest to you.

Join us on Tuesday 15 February from 11am to 11.45am for a presentation from auDA CEO Rosemary Sinclair AM, who will explain how the new system will work and what it means for your business’ online presence.

The session will include a moderated Q&A session with Ms Sinclair via written chat. If you’d like to submit a question prior to the webinar, please email events@victorianchamber.com.au.

Additional information is available on the auDA website.

auDA also recently released the inaugural Digital Lives of Australians report that included a survey of 1,500 Australian consumers and 400 small business owners who provided insights on their online experiences.

Ms Sinclair will share the report’s findings, including the top consumer and small business cyber concerns and challenges.
