Powering Victoria’s Future focuses on four key pillars: strengthening Victoria’s jobs and skills, building the best state to operate a business, driving Victoria’s economy, and growing regional Victoria.

Speaking to the second pillar, Building the best state to operate a business, Kate shares the lessons she's learned from her time on Shark Tank, operating Be Fit Food during a pandemic and growing a business through persistence and partnerships.

“For the businesses that survived [Covid] it’s been really tough,” she says. “We really had to knuckle down on what mattered most in the business and the most valuable parts of the business – those unique selling points… we had that time to spend on our vision.”

Kate also outlines the challenges of running a business in Victoria and what improvements could be made.

“Payroll tax in Victoria is an absolute killer for small businesses and doesn’t provide any incentive to bring on a larger team when you know you’re going to be penalised – there’s no relief there.

“Commercial tenancy agreements – how do we get some relief there. We’re all feeling that economic pressure from all angles, whether that be cost of living, but the cost of small business is there as well so it’s like you’re getting hit twice.”

In this episode we also discuss the very latest in the State Election campaign with Sean Sammon from the York Park Group.
