Did you know that ultraviolet (UV) radiation is an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risk for organisations that employ outdoor workers?

With summer approaching it is vital that workplaces prioritise sun safety for their outdoor workers.

WorkSafe Victoria has just updated the UV Guidance Note ‘Sun protection for Outdoor Workers’, the first major refresh in 12 years.

As an employer, employee or independent contractor, it is very important to understand the risk of occupational exposure to UV radiation in sunlight. Using this guidance will help you ensure that the risk of UV radiation exposure is eliminated or reduced in the workplace as much as it is reasonably practicable.

The WorkSafe Victoria guidance suggests the most effective way to eliminate or reduce the risk of UV exposure is to implement a combination of sun protection measures.

In order of effectiveness, these measures include:

• Re-organising work
• Using shade
• Providing appropriate protective clothing and equipment
• Applying sunscreen
