Chamber roundtable to tackle careers services

Improved careers services and advice is increasingly important in a labour market characterised by skills and labour shortages, skills mismatches and perceptions of vocational education and training (VET).

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce’s Policy Team is preparing a campaign on careers services and invites you to share your thoughts, concerns and ideas in an upcoming roundtable.

Our campaign will inform ongoing advocacy and cover all aspects of careers services across the country, including careers education in schools and training providers, careers development in employment support programs and workforce development.

The issue

High-quality career education and guidance is an essential part of preparing all Australians with the skills to navigate their careers.

The Victorian Chamber is hearing growing feedback from members and the wider business community about the importance of careers services.

Employers would like the current careers services available in Victoria and Australia to be improved because of its important role in education and training and the employment market.

An example of its impact is the poor perception of VET. Despite VET pathways often being the only pipeline for essential highly skilled and technical occupations needed by the nation for the current infrastructure, economic growth and productivity, a 2022 Australian Government Discussion paper found 38 per cent of current skills shortages are in occupations with a VET pathway.

Roundtable

To advocate for the changes that businesses need to thrive, it’s critical for the Victorian Chamber to hear directly from members about the improvements needed in the careers advice landscape.

The roundtables, on May 25 and May 30, will be used as a forum to discuss what business think works well, recent government investments and programs, and what improvements you would like to see.

The consultation will focus on growing businesses, building resilience among the labour market and increasing knowledge about the wide range of training and occupation options available.

Feedback is welcome from businesses of all types, shapes, and sizes. More information about the roundtables and other events are available on the Chamber’s upcoming events page.
