Chief Executive Update 14 December 2023

13 December 2023

I have spent the morning representing the Chamber at the State Parliamentary Inquiry into WorkCover to ensure the views of business are heard.

We all recognise the importance of the WorkCover system, and its sustainability is paramount. Business cannot carry the increase in costs that the Government has flagged to keep the system operational. There are changes required, and we know this will be a phased approach.

More details are required around Return to Work Victoria before we can fully support the legislation as it stands. We know the union movement has raised separate concerns about the Legislation, and we know as a collective there is a way through.

Data from our Cost and Ease of Doing Business report determined that only 21 per cent of Victorian business owners feel supported in managing their mental health and wellbeing. Small and medium-sized businesses will be particularly impacted as they lack time, resources and internal expertise.

We shared our support for the creation of a structured and endorsed program to drive accelerated and targeted intervention and measurement to improve workplace wellbeing outcomes AND simultaneously contribute to the financial sustainability of WorkCover, without imposing a disproportionate cost on Victorian businesses. Hopefully we see some positive outcomes early 2024.

I’d like to send my congratulations to all parents of year 12 graduates. As someone who has experienced the frenzy and stress of VCE three times through my own children, I understand how taxing a time it is not just for them, but for the entire household!

The path ahead for each of them will be different, but we know the options available are plentiful. In time we hope they will make a significant contribution to the Victorian Business Community.

In the spirit of new beginnings, consider embracing apprenticeships and traineeships through Apprenticeship Support Australia. For employers, creating positions for apprentices or trainees can yield substantial benefits for your business and contribute to the development of our future workforce. Equally, a path to further education through University or TAFE for the graduates is always worthy of consideration.

As we approach the close of 2023, I want to take a moment to reflect on the highs and lows of the year and express my sincere gratitude for your continued support.

This year has been a testament to the resilience and adaptability of our members. We faced challenges that tested our mettle, yet in overcoming them, we discovered new strengths within our community. Together, we navigated uncertainties, celebrated successes and reinforced the spirit of collaboration that defines the Victoria Chamber.

In 2024, we look forward to building on this foundation of resilience. Challenges are not roadblocks; they are stepping stones to opportunities. With a new year comes fresh perspectives and chances for growth. While we may not start with a blank slate, we do have the power to reshape our narratives and embrace the possibilities that lie ahead.

Our Events Team is curating a calendar filled with premium business networking opportunities. The Policy and Advocacy Team is gearing up for engaging discussions on the 2024 State and Federal Budgets, ensuring your voices are heard. We will host more roundtables as different issues emerge to stay abreast of your priorities and concerns, ensuring our advocacy aligns with your needs.

Our commitment to workplace health and safety remains unwavering. As legislative changes emerge, our teams are ready to guide you through any challenges, providing the latest information and resources to help your business thrive in a dynamic environment.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated Board, especially our Victorian Chamber President, Adrian Kloeden. To my Executive Team, thanks for your exemplary leadership, support and input throughout the year. Your commitment has been instrumental in the Chamber’s success.

A special thank you to our Victorian Chamber and Melbourne Chamber Teams for their unwavering dedication and hard work. The tireless efforts of each team member contribute to the vibrancy of our organisation.

To all our members and clients: your business, support, and trust have been the pillars of our achievements. As we wrap up 2023, I extend my sincere appreciation for your contributions to our vibrant community. I know you make active decisions around membership with us, and utilising the services we offer. I appreciate that you choose the Victorian Chamber, and I hope that you will continue to support us into 2024.

To everyone who celebrates, may I wish you a Merry Christmas. And to everyone, as we enter the Christmas holiday period, I wish each and every one of you a wonderful and safe time with your loved ones. Anticipate 2024 as a year filled with exciting opportunities and successes for your businesses.

Thank you, and here’s to a prosperous and fulfilling New Year!
