15 March 2023

I hope you all made the most of the long weekend and those who opened or worked did a roaring trade, the weather was certainly in full cooperation!

From all reports, the long weekend was an enjoyable one with 1.4 million getting along to the four-day Moomba Festival which, in its 67th year, is one of our Melbourne’s most unique flagship events. Regional Victoria was also bustling with activity, and I personally was happy to get back to my hometown of Bairnsdale to catch up with family and friends.

And the momentum continues to build with the 2023 Men’s AFL Season kick off tonight at the ‘G. The return of men’s footy season always provides a welcome boost to businesses around the MCG, Marvel, and Kardinia Park, as well as for all those bars and restaurants that screen the games for the fans who can’t make it in person.

It was great to read the announcement yesterday from Victorian Minister for Industry and Innovation Ben Carroll that he and EL AL CEO Dina Ben Tal Ganancia have cosigned a letter of intent to bring non-stop flights between Tel Aviv and Melbourne by June 2024. This is a fantastic development and will bring more visitors from Israel to Australia, increase investment opportunities and create new local jobs, while delivering a $48 million boost to Victoria’s economy.

Meanwhile, the Victorian Government’s Made in Victoria – Manufacturing Growth Program is currently accepting applications from small and medium-sized businesses that are on a growth trajectory and require support to expand their manufacturing operations. Grants of between $50,000 to $250,000 are available and can be used to introduce new technologies, expand operations, improve productivity or enhance sovereign manufacturing, while also enabling business to improve productivity and competitiveness, create new jobs and upskill and reskill workers. Applications close 6 April 2023, and you can find more information here.

Finally, I’d like to congratulate Melbourne Chamber member, Deakin University, who is making history as the first university in the world to open an international teaching campus in India.

The state-of-the-art campus will give students access to future-ready Deakin post-graduate courses aligned with local employment needs, and its opening should coincide with Deakin’s 50th anniversary and 30 years in India. Congratulations to John Stanhope AM, Chancellor of Deakin and Professor Iain Martin, Vice-Chancellor of Deakin, on this tremendous opportunity and your ongoing commitment to providing a world-class education and learning experience for students across the globe.

Have a wonderful weekend!
