Chief Executive Update 19 October 2023

19 October 2023

You would be aware the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival took place on Sunday, with over 40,000 participants raising more than $1.5 million for charity. I am proud to report that the Victorian Chamber had a dedicated team of athletes, from the 5km run to the full marathon. In a late decision, due to an illness with one of our registered team members, I joined in the 5km run, and can report it was a fantastic experience. And my hamstrings are almost back to normal!

Being in the throng of participants of all abilities for a compelling cause got me thinking - if we can bring that many people together just from across the state, imagine what we could achieve if we launched Melbourne as a global marathon destination! Melbourne’s fast and flat conditions make us the ideal setting for all, from the competitive marathon runners to the first timers and walkers. It could become a bucket-list achievement similar to the prestige of the New York, Boston, Tokyo and London Marathons. Can you imagine? What a drawcard that would be for our city and state!

You may have caught the Herald Sun article on the submission VCCI made to the City of Melbourne’s “Future Streets” which was prepared with input from our members. A thriving central business district is key to Melbourne clawing back its vibrancy, its liveability, in attracting new business and as destination for major events. The city must be safe, accessible, and clean. This is what the business community is asking the City of Melbourne to deliver to their ratepayers.

Recent challenges such as reduced foot traffic, increased rough sleeping and aggressive begging, perceptions of unsafety and traffic congestion have all impacted the City’s appeal as a place to work or operate a business.

As I told the Herald Sun, the City of Melbourne’s Future Streets plan does not provide enough detail for how increases in people will be accommodated regardless of which mode of transport they use to get into the city.

The Chamber asserts that Future Streets needs careful planning and further detail. We genuinely hope that now that the City of Melbourne has our stakeholder informed submission, it rises to meet the challenges, planning with practicality in mind, rather than ideology.

I had the honour of attending the Monash International Affairs Society diplomatic gala last night. This annual event serves as a unique platform for students, diplomats, and leaders from diverse sectors to engage in conversations about international affairs and cultivate meaningful connections. Those relationships forged will undoubtedly benefit our chamber and the broader business community.

Finally, now that we know the results from the referendum, undoubtedly there will be a range of emotions. It’s what happens next that matters most now, and we cannot have a divided Australia. We need a way to clearly move ahead and for all Australians to unite, and work towards a stronger engagement with our Indigenous colleagues and friends. A healthy business sector will ensure a healthy community and that should be a dual focus now at every level.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
