Chief Executive Update 20 October 2022

19 October 2022

The floods across the state are another powerful reminder of the natural disasters Australians endure. In Victoria, the pandemic has been bookended by bushfires and floods, causing more disruption for thousands of people.

Pleasingly the response from both the State and Federal Governments has been swift and comprehensive, as has been the generosity of so many Victorians who’ve helped their neighbours, friends, family and total strangers in their hour of need.

We are seeing thousands of people descending on affected towns to donate food, fuel, labour and machinery, filling sandbags and offering accommodation and aid. Good Samaritans have travelled to impacted areas with horse trailers to help move horses, cattle and livestock, and dozens more navigating the floodwaters to rescue pets and wildlife. Not to mention our tireless emergency services workers.

Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the numerous businesses who have had to deal with yet another setback. Unfortunately, the danger has not yet passed and some communities are bracing for the worst. If you are in those areas, we hope that you stay safe.

The Victorian Government has announced a $351 million flood recovery package to assist in beginning clean-up efforts and for families affected by the disaster, while the Federal Government is providing support payments for residents in 24 Victorian flood-ravaged communities. Additional funding will be announced in the coming weeks and those wishing to access the payments already available should visit emergencypayments.dffh.vic.gov.au or call 1800 226 226.

And whilst all of us will be keeping a close eye on the floods, and we will all be ready to support as required, we do know business must go on.

We welcomed Tourism Australia’s new global tourism campaign Come and Say G’day, as a much-needed boost for our valuable tourism sector to bounce back from the impacts of COVID-19. This new multi-market, mass awareness campaign inviting international travellers to plan and book an unforgettable Australian holiday was one of the Victorian Chamber’s key recommendations in our Federal Budget Submission under Activating Victorian Businesses, and this investment could not have come at a better time.

In other exciting news, I am proud to announce that we will soon be launching our own podcast, Business Voice, which will explore the issues important to business and our economy. The first season will be a deep dive into the upcoming Victorian election, focusing on the role business will play in powering Victoria’s future, as well as the issues that will be front of mind for voters when they go to the polls on November 26.

We will also be talking directly with our members about what is important to them, and to the experts about what we can expect come election day. Keep an eye out for our first episode which will be landing wherever you listen to podcasts in the coming weeks!

It was wonderful to see so many people attend our Melbourne Cup Carnival Lunch. Our guest speakers, Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver, presenter Emma Freedman and VRC Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosich spoke about how important the Cup Carnival is for Victoria and it will be fantastic to see it celebrated at full capacity again. You can see the event photos here.

Finally our first Chamber Change program concluded yesterday. It has been brilliant, and I thank everyone involved. Our next session is set for the new year, and keep an eye on our website for details.

And just a quick reminder for our Future Victoria lunch we are running with the Herald Sun on November 4th. It will be a great opportunity to hear from Treasurer Tim Pallas, Opposition Leader Matt Guy, and some our States leaders including Penny Fowler and Janet Whiting. See our website on how you can purchase your tickets.

Have a great week, may the rains and flood waters subside, stay safe, and look after each other.
