The Sustainable Mineral Processing and Green Steel Program partnership will build national research and innovation capacity to help industry explore low-emission steel technologies.

The collaboration will address key net-zero challenges for the mineral resources industry, including low-carbon options for iron, steel and critical metals, as well as improving recycling technologies.

With a focus on future capabilities, bringing new skills to the energy transition challenge is a crucial aspect of the partnership, with research fellows and PhD candidates from both institutions to work alongside international researchers and industry.

The program will also provide a platform for international conferences, industry courses, and engagement for students through scholarships, joint final year projects and work experience programs.

As part of its Net Zero 2025 Pathways, Swinburne has invested in researchers from minerals characterisation, minerals processing, pyrometallurgy and materials recycling. Coupled with CSIRO’s minerals research and development expertise, researchers from both organisations will lead and guide the program.

This work supports Australia’s hard-to-abate sectors to halve their emissions by 2035, and forms part of CSIRO’s Towards Net Zero Mission.

Joint Swinburne/CSIRO Chair in Sustainable Mineral Processing Professor Geoffrey Brooks said: “I am honoured to be named as the Joint Swinburne/CSIRO Chair of the Sustainable Mineral Processing and Green Steel Program. I think the announcement further deepens our longstanding relationship with CSIRO in this important area.

“I’m expecting Swinburne and CSIRO to play a key role in Australia’s drive towards green steel and producing critical metals in a sustainable manner. It’s a great time for innovation and implementing new ideas.”

Journey to Net Zero event

The Victorian Chamber and many of its members are committed to collaborate with business, education and governments on achieving decarbonisation and renewable energy targets.

On 8 March 2024, the Victorian Chamber is hosting a special event, From Commitment to Action: The Journey to Net Zero, where you can engage with industry leaders, gain insights and empower your business to thrive as we power towards a net zero era.

Industry experts will share their knowledge about the transition to net zero, the crucial role Victorian businesses play and the support available for those embarking on this transformative journey.
