Premier Andrews steps down after nine years in the role. He was appointed to Cabinet in 2006, becoming Minister for Health in 2007. He became Leader of the Opposition in 2010 before winning the 2014 State Election. As the State's 48th Premier he was re-elected twice – in 2018 and 2022.

Premier Andrews is the longest-serving Victorian Labor Premier, overtaking John Cain Jr in April 2023, who served from 1982 to 1990.

“To have been Premier for nine years and the leader of my party for 13 years is a greater set of opportunities than I ever thought would be afforded to me – a kid from the country with only really an aspiration to do good, to work hard, to work with teams of people that perhaps make things better,” Premier Andrews said in a press conference.

“It’s not an easy job being premier of our state. It requires 100 per cent from you and your family.

“I have always known that the moment that happens, it is time to give this privilege, this amazing responsibility, to someone else.”

Premier Andrews led the State through several significant challenges, including the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we thank him for his leadership during those unprecedented times.

We look forward to working collaboratively with the incoming Premier and Government to ensure a prosperous and resilient future for all Victorians.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Paul Guerra said: “I extend my thanks to Premier Daniel Andrews for his dedicated service to the State of Victoria over the past nine years as Premier. The Victorian Chamber acknowledges his commitment to our great State, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During my time at the Chamber, the Government has been instrumental in establishing a number of business incentives and grants such as the COVID-19 Business Support payments and Business Solar Grants; programs like our Business Mentoring Program, SummerTech Live and Digital Jobs; and ambitious infrastructure agendas including the removal of level crossings and the soon-to-be-operational Metro Tunnel.”

“The Premier’s term and contribution has been extensive and will be categorised as one that has advanced social solutions and infrastructure in this State.

“The Chamber remains committed to working closely with the Government to address the key issues facing our business community.

“We wish the Premier and his family all the very best for their future.”

A successor will be announced later this week.
