Fostering culture pays off

21 December 2023

As the end of the year approaches, most workers will enjoy a break and then set goals for next year.

Leaders too will do the same. The smart ones will reflect on the impact they have made and start to work through style adjustments they will make in 2024.

Hybrid workplaces are here to stay. So, fostering a positive company culture has never been more crucial. And it's more difficult given the in-and-out nature that remote work presents.

Company culture impacts company performance, determines where employees work, and how much effort they put in. Culture is everything!

It's a common misconception that you can just sprinkle culture on your office like fairy dust. You can’t. Culture is an outcome. It's an outcome of living the values of the organisation. To create the right culture, we must define these values, then live by them.

Leading with values is not a set and forget. It requires leading by example and empowering employees to be accountable. An organisation's culture reflects how well its values are lived, and every employee plays a part in propagating this.

For those unwilling to align with the organisation's values, a difficult decision must be made. This might seem harsh, but it's essential to ensure that the culture thrives. Remaining in a workplace inconsistent with personal values only leads to dissatisfaction and professional regression.

Leadership is undergoing a transformation. We're moving away from the traditional command-and-control model to embrace distributed authority. It’s vital to delegate decision-making, empowering individuals closer to the action, and trust in the team. As I like to say, why hire a rockstar if they need your permission to play the guitar?

This shift is towards creating an environment where individuals operate as if it's their own business, within defined boundaries. The true joy of leadership lies in seeing individuals flourish through the autonomy to contribute on their own, in their own style. And as they say, “pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.”

As we wave 2023 goodbye, it's an opportune to reflect. We know the challenge ahead for our state is significant, so let's make 2024 the year of leadership in every aspect. Driving your company culture is the key to that.
