Free overseas qualifications assessment

As Victorian businesses continue to grapple with staff and skills shortages, it may come as some relief to learn the Overseas Qualifications Unit (OQU) provides a free and confidential assessment of current or prospective employees’ overseas qualifications to determine their compatibility with Australian standards.

The Victorian Government’s OQU service works to recognise overseas qualifications in Australia to help individuals secure work locally.

It also helps employers, educational institutions and other organisations interpret overseas education and qualifications for their potential employees and students.

The OQU assesses qualifications within six weeks, based on Australian Government assessment guidelines covering 127 countries.

What are assessments used for?

Overseas qualifications assessments are used for general employment purposes only – if the employment doesn’t require registration, licensing, professional membership or other industry requirements.

Assessments are used as qualifications evidence for:

  • potential employers, human resource departments and recruitment agents
  • resumes/curriculum vitae (e.g. stating that your qualification has been assessed by the Victorian Government’s Overseas Qualifications Unit and include the Australian-equivalent result)
  • professional associations and educational institutions including professional bodies or admitting institutions.

Individuals must be living in Victoria to be eligible for the assessments. Other Australian jurisdictions have similar services – the Overseas Qualifications Unit applies in the state or territory you live in.

A free assessment and more information can be found via: Overseas Qualification Unit - Live in Melbourne.

Karolina’s story

Soon-to-be Australian citizen Karolina Staniszewska had a Licencjat in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from the University of Warsaw in Poland. Equivalent to a Bachelors degree, it allows her to teach English in both private and public schools in Poland. After two years teaching English in China, Karolina moved to Australia to be with her partner.

Recently Karolina’s employer required her Licencjat to be formally recognised by Victoria. She was able to get all her documents together quickly and the OQU helped resolve a potentially stressful situation.

“We managed to get all the documents assessed, and it all came through within just a day. It was a very easy experience,” Karolina said.
