With cybercrime on the rise in Australia, businesses and consumers are increasingly vulnerable to the financial, operational and reputational risks of these attacks.

Trust in the business community to handle data safely shatters in the wake of cyber-attacks, with recent Medibank and Optus data breaches examples of this.

Last year, on the back of the increasing incidence of cybercrime and its impact on business, the Victorian Chamber released its Cyber Security and Scams Policy Position, containing 24 recommendations to government to protect businesses from cyber threats.

In particular, feedback from members and industry stakeholders highlighted that the demand for advanced cyber professionals has outweighed our local supply of cyber talent, and that recent graduates of traditional university and TAFE cyber security courses are not meeting industry expectations.

A key aspect of the Chamber’s Policy Position was advocating for the adoption of an apprenticeship-style training model for cyber security, which the Cyber Degree Apprenticeships Thought Leadership Report elaborates on.

Australia needs 17,000 additional cyber security workers, comprising of experienced ‘head and hand’ professionals who can apply critical analysis and problem-solving while implementing practical skills and techniques to fend off cyber criminals.

Cyber security training models must be fit-for-purpose and able to supply industry with experienced cyber professionals who can capably combat cyber threats.

Currently, there are minimal internship and entry-level cyber security roles in industry. This is because industry has limited capacity and incentives to train newcomers on the job and, therefore, often prefers hiring professionals with at least a few years of experience.

Cyber degree apprenticeships would provide industry with a pipeline of skilled cyber security professionals to protect businesses from cyber threats.

Launched at the Australian Cyber Conference 2024 in Canberra, our Cyber Degree Apprenticeships Thought Leadership Report is a deep-dive into that game-changing idea, which could transform cyber training in Australia if implemented correctly with the right policy settings in place.
