Delegates from 15 countries across the region attended the two-day conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, exploring the theme `Emerging Powerhouses: How Chambers of Commerce Will Define the New Economy’.

In a message to the conference, the Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce John Denton said the world continued to face significant economic challenges including rising inflation, interest rates and supply chain disruptions.

Mr Denton said the Asia-Pacific would play a significant role. “Today the region is the engine room of the global economy and should serve as a hub for innovation and leadership,” he said.

“We believe the Chambers and their respective business communities have a particular role to play … Chamber leaders can play a crucial role in coming together to shape the post pandemic world.

“We have seen this with the increasing importance of facilitating partnerships between companies, NGOs, community groups and with governments. Where Chambers have successfully positioned themselves as the facilitators of these very important partnerships.”

The President of CACCI Samir Modi told the conference that Chambers would play a vital role as the world continued to deal with economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

“I strongly believe that Chambers of Commerce and business organisations will be crucial post- pandemic."

“We all need to become one and help each other by sharing our experiences in our Chambers and sharing the immense knowledge you possess.”

In a welcome to delegates, former Victorian Premier John Brumby said: “ I don’t think there can be a better time to bring together so many leaders from such a dynamic part of the world.

“I’m a great believer that governments can only do so much. It’s the business to business relationships, it’s the fresh ideas, it’s the big breakthroughs that come from business and come to gatherings like this. And really that’s what Chambers of Commerce and Industry are all about.”

The Chief Executive of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Paul Guerra spoke about the important role played by the Chamber during the pandemic and as Victora now set about its economic recovery.
