Ms. Dessau’s recounting of her experiences as Victoria’s first female Governor held the 300-strong audience spellbound for more than 40 minutes. The light-hearted recollections, interspersed with laughter, created a unique atmosphere, and I must say, I’ve never seen a room so taken with a guest speaker. I extend heartfelt thanks to my friend Linda for her generosity in sharing her insights and making this event truly memorable. It was fabulous to have her husband Tony Howard AM KC, join us as well as witness the partnership bond with Linda and Tony.

In another noteworthy engagement, I was honoured to deliver the keynote address for the Australian Centre for Career Education at The University of Melbourne. This platform provided an excellent opportunity to promote our Career Services Policy Paper, which outlines 29 recommendations aimed at enhancing the future of career services, not only in Victoria but across Australia. The enthusiastic reception I received from career services professionals was proof of the support we have for these recommendations.

I also had the privilege of serving as the MC for the official opening of MCC member Davidsons’ new offices. Minister Ben Carroll, who officiated the event, added a distinguished touch to the occasion. It was a pleasure to witness and celebrate the growth and success of one of our valued members.

Davidson's Managing Partner, Clare McCartin, has become a trusted friend of mine and is a wonderful contributor to the Chamber. She is an active member of the Executive Council and was also one of our initial Chamber Change Champions and remains a popular Champion who attendees love to learn from. It is fabulous to see the growth of Davidsons from the leadership and engagement that Clare and her team are providing.

We have an informative article online highlighting the recent changes to fixed-term contract (FTC) conditions under the Fair Work Legislation Amendment Act. Effective as of 6 December 2023, employers are now restricted from keeping a worker on an FTC for more than two years and are prohibited from extending or renewing an FTC more than once. These changes are significant, and we encourage all members to familiarise themselves with the updated regulations to ensure compliance.

With the WorkCover Inquiry now open, it’s our intention to present input from the business community. We have been clear that premium increases must be minimised, and the system must be modernised to ensure a sustainable future for all Victorian business and employees.
