Chief Executive Update 23 November 2023

23 November 2023

The Federal Government yesterday announced that more than half a billion dollars’ worth of measures will be dedicated to Australia’s landmark cyber security strategy until 2030, which includes $290.8 million to uplift small and medium businesses, $143 billion to defend critical infrastructure and $129.7 million to build regional cooperation and resilience.

You will no doubt recall the Victorian Chamber’s own Cyber Security and Scams Policy Position which we released a couple of months back. I was really pleased to see alignment between Policy ideas and the Federal Government initiatives including the Government’s Small Business Cyber Resilience Service. It recognises the importance of cyber resilience for small businesses. The Government’s announcement also includes a voluntary cyber health check program.

We look forward to seeing the operational detail of the strategy, and how the Victorian Chamber can help our members by implementing programs, campaigns and projects to help Australia to be the most cyber secure nation by 2030.

Another huge issue that continues to plague business is the skills shortage, so I am supportive of the Victorian Government’s Skills Solutions Partnerships (SSP) program. This groundbreaking initiative, unveiled by the Hon. Natalie Hutchins, Minister for Jobs and Industry, aims to bridge skills gaps in priority areas by bringing together government, industry, TAFEs and dual-sector universities.

The Victorian Chamber’s Policy and Advocacy Team played a pivotal role in shaping this innovative program, providing valuable industry insights throughout the development process. The SSP program offers a fully government-funded co-design process, along with co-funded grants of up to $1.2 million to support eligible pilots. Expressions of interest are open now and will close on March 15, 2024.

I’m pleased to announce that a new episode of our Business Voice podcast is now live! In this must-listen interview, Australian television presenter, journalist and commentator, the inimitable Eddie McGuire, opens up about aspects of his life never publicly discussed before. It was truly one of the most enjoyable conversations I have ever had, and I encourage each of you to take the time to tune in. The insights shared are both enlightening and inspiring. Listen here or via your favourite podcast platform.

It was fabulous to meet with Premier Jacinta Allan over coffee at our offices on Friday. It won’t surprise you that the mooted WorkCover reforms was a major topic of conversation and one that I’ve also canvassed with Opposition Leader John Pesutto and his Shadow Ministry.

The Bill is currently before Parliament. The Victorian Chamber’s position remains that business will not and cannot absorb another exorbitant increase next year. Therefore, the system must be reformed, and preventative measures and programs must form a major part of that.

I’m looking forward to the AFLW Preliminary Finals games this weekend to see which teams will go head-to-head in the 2023 NAB AFLW Grand Final on Sunday December 3, and which team will earn the home ground hosting rights! We are looking forward to our annual AFLW Grand Final Lunch next week with Melbourne FC captain Kate Hore and Essendon FC co-captain Bonnie Toogood joining us as our special guest speakers. Ticket sales close on Friday at 5pm, so grab yours now!

As calendars fill up with year-end celebrations, both professionally and personally, I encourage each of you to be kind to yourselves during this busy time. Your dedication and hard work throughout the year deserves recognition and celebration.

Hard to believe it’s only a month until Christmas… and if you are attempting to hunt down some bargains with the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, I urge you to prioritise cyber security. Be vigilant about your online activities and avoid clicking on suspicious links, as reinforced by Victoria Police.

Have a wonderful weekend!
