At Origin, we support businesses with advice and energy solutions that fit their specific needs and decarbonisation goals.

The key to success is seeing decarbonisation as a journey, taking simple steps over time.

Step 1: Simple Energy Efficiency Tips

In today’s business landscape, energy efficiency is not only a cost-saving measure but also a crucial step towards environmental responsibility. Implementing simple yet effective strategies can not only reduce operational expenses but also contribute to a company’s commitment to decarbonisation.

These solutions can range from upgrading to energy efficient lighting to finding and fixing leaks in compresses air systems. For a full list of energy efficient tips to reduce your energy usage for your business, click here

Step 2: Get an energy health-check

An energy health-check helps you understand your business’s energy costs, and using your energy smarter could help you save. Your energy provider or a 3rd party specialist can assist you with this audit.

By undertaking an energy health-check, you can further understand your energy cost and usage patterns, look at whether demand management and consumption at off-peak times could reduce your bills, assess the effectiveness of your electricity by looking at the PowerFactor, request a tariff review and look at consumption patterns to make sure you’re on the correct tariff for your needs.

Step 3: Choose an energy plan with GreenPower

One of the easiest ways for businesses to start their decarbonisation journey is by choosing GreenPower. This means the equivalent amount of electricity from GreenPower-accredited renewable sources is sourced to match the selected percentage of your electricity usage, which will go back into the energy grid.

Energy retailers have generally available plans that offer GreenPower. For more information about Origin’s GreenPower add-on options for your business energy plan, click here

Step 4: Invest in assets to help decarbonise

Our ambition is to lead the energy transition through cleaner energy and customer solutions.

1. Take advantage of programs like the Small Business Energy Incentive:

Small businesses can now access tax relief on energy-efficient upgrades through the Small Business Energy Incentive program. Until 30 June 2024, eligible small businesses with an annual turnover of less than $50 million can receive a bonus 20% tax deduction for assets that support electrification and the more efficient use of energy.

This initiative aims to provide $310 million in tax relief and support for up to 3.8 million Australian small businesses. Up to $100,000 of total expenditure is eligible, meaning the maximum bonus tax deduction for small businesses is $20,000.

2. Consider solar power:

Investing in solar allows you to reduce your electricity bills by harnessing energy from the sun during the day, which is when many businesses are typically using the most electricity. And with the development of alternate payment options, businesses now have more flexibility when it comes to purchasing a solar system.

3. Add a battery to your solar setup:

If you really want to reduce your business’s reliance on the energy grid, it may be worthwhile adding a battery to your solar setup. Batteries capture and store unused energy generated by your solar panels for you to use when the sun isn’t shining – like during the evening.

4. Electrify your fleet:

If your business has a fleet of vehicles, electrifying it is another way you can reduce your emissions and start to decarbonise your business. There’s also an increasing selection of car models, charging options and financial incentives available.
