The Ukraine Independence Day took on heightened emphasis this year amid the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

His Excellency has been in his role since April, not long after war broke out. He was previously an advisor to the Minister of Defence of Ukraine and a member of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian Institute. Before joining the Foreign Service, the Ambassador was an active business and civil society leader in Ukraine.

His Excellency drew on his experience to warn Australia about overreliance on regional trading partners, encouraging diversification including strengthening economic ties with the Ukraine.

“Because we’re a business community, I want to talk about the bright light at the end of this tunnel,” he said.

“There are many different sectors which I believe have huge potential for Australian businesses. Of course risks are high, but where the risks are high there’s also rewards.

“The fact that the European Union countries have recognised Ukraine’s aspirations and recognise us as a candidate member, it actually offers a pathway to one of the largest markets in the world.

“We already have a free trade agreement with the EU and that is going to create many opportunities for many companies who will come in and invest in Ukraine.

“I would encourage you to hedge your bets in manufacturing in Ukraine, because you don’t know how long you can rely on China in terms of supplies, in terms of manufacturing.

“It can all change overnight and being overreliant on one market is too dangerous.”

His Excellency acknowledged the domestic and global impacts of the invasion but remains steadfast that his country will mend.

“This is very different from what we did last year. We actually realised that we had to fight for our freedom and we need to fight for our independence,” Mr Myroshnychenko said.

“It’s going to take several generations to rebuild. But we want to rebuild better and stronger. We must be optimistic.”

Melbourne Chamber Chief Executive Scott Veenker thanked His Excellency for his time and invaluable insight.

“We were delighted to host the Ambassador of Ukraine today to acknowledge Ukraine Independence Day. He was very generous with his time and also providing some examples of how businesses in Victoria can help in terms of purchasing products from the Ukraine economy and looking at investment opportunities as well.

“It’s certainly a challenge but the reality is that most Australians and Australian businesses are thinking of how we can help. We want to do what’s right to help people in need regardless of whether it’s in business or in personal life.”
