The consequences of non-compliance can be severe. According to WorkSafe Victoria, more than 120 employers were fined for safety breaches in 2022. Two companies were also charged with workplace manslaughter over multiple health and safety breaches.

Workplace injury also leads to broad economic loss. There were 6.9 million work-related injuries and illnesses in Australia between 2008-2018, causing $37.6 billion in health system costs and a 2.2 million FTE productivity loss.

Conversely, strong evidence exists that a safe and healthy workplace is good for physical and mental wellbeing, increasing job participation and productivity, lower absenteeism rates and fewer workplace injury and workers’ compensation claims.
