COVID isolation reduced to five days

A National Cabinet meeting of Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments has agreed to reduce COVID-19 isolation periods and remove mask mandates on domestic flights.

From 9 September, the isolation period for COVID-19 positive cases will be reduced from seven to five days following a positive test.

Seven days will still apply for workers in high-risk setting including aged care, disability care, and those providing care in the home.

Others can leave isolation after five days only if they are asymptomatic. National Cabinet also agreed to remove the mandatory wearing of masks on domestic flights.

No decision was made regarding masks on public transport, which will still be required as per individual State and Territory Government directions.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “This is a proportionate response at this point in the pandemic.”

The Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment (PLDP) eligibility will reflect the changed isolation periods, effective the same date.

The PLDP was extended in July but is due to expire at the end of September. National cabinet will meet again before then to discuss what will happen after that period.

National Cabinet also agreed to remove the mandatory wearing of masks on domestic flights.
