Forestry industry transition support

Financial support is available for businesses affected by the ending of native timber harvesting.

The Victorian Government has announced the end date for native timber harvesting in Victoria has been brought forward from 2030 to 1 January 2024.

Support packages are available for businesses impacted by the decision via the Forestry Transition Program, including:

The Timber Supply Chain Resilience Package – grants to support manufacturers of native timber products to make business decisions.

The Victorian Timber Innovation Fund - grants to help impacted forestry businesses transition from native timber to alternative fibres and investigate manufacturing opportunities.​

Timber Supply Chain Resilience Package

The Forestry Transition Program assists the industry to transition from native timber harvesting.

Applications are now open for manufacturers of native hardwood products to access business transition support. Two categories in this fund include:

Moderately impacted manufacturers can apply for a grant of up to $3,000 to access services, advice, or expertise from their nominated Qualified Service Provider, to assist with business continuity and to plan for the future.

Highly impacted manufacturers can apply for a voucher valued at up to $25,000 to access professional services and advice to develop a Business Transition Plan. Voucher recipients may then be invited to apply for a grant of up to $120,000 to implement their business transition plan.

Victorian Timber Innovation Fund

The Timber Innovation Grants Program provides native timber industry businesses with funds to explore, invest and implement new opportunities, to assist with their transition.

Eligible businesses are those who hold a current agreement with VicForests as a sawmill, harvest and/or haulage contractor, or haulage sub-contractor and seed collectors.

The Timber Innovation Grants Program will provide grants up to $1 million. Grants over $1 million may be considered for projects that create significant job opportunities and have local community benefit.

Applications for Round 2 are open now and will close at 11.59pm 31 August 2023.
