According to Social Ventures Australia (SVA), 20 per cent of young people are actively looking for more work but can’t find it. After education, it takes almost three years to find full-time work.

Conversely, 70 per cent of employers are having difficulty filling roles.

For youth and employers in this category, Employer Innovation Labs is an initiative that helps employers design and pilot practice changes that bridge this gap, delivering an immersive learning experience that reshapes talent practice to harness young potential.

The benefits are material, with the most diverse companies across the world financially outperforming competitors by up to 35 per cent, SVA says.

Program

The Lab is designed for employers looking to diversify recruitment streams, open to hiring young people from diverse backgrounds and committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As part of the program, SVA partners with successful applicants over 12 months to take workforce pilot initiatives from idea to implementation, developing strategies that improve both social and business outcomes, tap into youth talent pools, address workforce challenges and increase workplace diversity.

The program starts with a two-day workshop examining the youth employment sector. Together with youth consultants, a tailored pilot is co-developed by SVA and supplemented by a year of pro-bono expert coaching to implement workshop pilots, opportunities for deeper collaboration with community partners, engagement with its network and thought leadership events.

Post-Lab, employers are guided in scaling the pilot or finding more youth engagement opportunities, creating a case study for internal or public use, along with other engagement and alumni network opportunities.

Labs are being held across 2023-24 in Australian metro areas, identifying opportunities to attract and retain young people seeking employment.
